Aluminum Welding in Fort Wayne: What We'll Take On
Aluminum welds nothing like steel. Here's why, which aluminum jobs tend to go smoothly, which are a no, and a 30-second test to check your metal.
Get My Free QuoteAluminum can absolutely be welded on-site — but it behaves nothing like steel, and an honest welder will tell you which jobs are worth it before striking an arc. Here's our honest answer: our rig is stick and flux-core built for carbon steel, so we don't weld aluminum, and we'll say so before you spend a dollar.
What we can take on is the steel side of the job. We can also tell you fast which aluminum repairs are worth taking to a shop set up for it, and which aren't worth chasing at all.
WHY ALUMINUM IS A DIFFERENT ANIMAL
- The oxide layer. Aluminum grows a thin, tough oxide skin almost instantly, and that skin melts at a much higher temperature than the metal under it. It has to be cleaned off right before welding, or the weld won't fuse.
- It pulls heat away. Aluminum conducts heat far faster than steel, so heat spreads away from the joint instead of staying where the weld needs it. The welder has to fight that with more heat, then back off as the part warms up.
- No color warning. Steel glows as it heats, so a welder can see trouble coming. Aluminum gives almost no visual warning before it slumps or melts through.
- Cracking risk. Some aluminum alloys crack as the weld cools, and a filler that doesn't match the alloy makes it worse. That's why knowing exactly what the part is matters before anyone starts.
None of this makes aluminum bad. It just takes a different process and setup than the steel rig we bring.
ALUMINUM REPAIRS THAT USUALLY GO SMOOTHLY
For a welder set up for aluminum, a few kinds of jobs are usually straightforward:
- Solid aluminum brackets and mounts with clean, thick sections.
- Thicker-section railings and posts, like heavier pipe or square tube.
- Small fabrication on material around 1/8 inch thick or heavier.
Thick, clean, solid material gives the heat somewhere to go and the welder room to work. If your job fits one of these, it's a good candidate for a shop with an aluminum setup.
Where we fit in: if a carbon steel part can replace the broken aluminum one — a bracket, a mount, a stand — we can build it to your measurements. That's the small fabrication work in Fort Wayne we take on, as long as the extra weight of steel isn't a problem for the job.
WHAT WE'LL TELL YOU NO ON
Every aluminum weld is a no from us, because our rig is built for steel. But some aluminum jobs are a hard pass for almost any welder, and hearing that fast saves you money:
- Die-cast pot metal. Cheap castings — old fixtures, some handles and housings — are often a mystery alloy that crumbles or boils under heat. Replacement usually beats repair.
- Paper-thin gutters and trim. Thin aluminum melts through faster than it can be welded. Sealant, rivets, or a new piece is the honest fix.
- Structural repairs that need sign-off. If a failure could hurt someone, the repair needs a licensed engineer's sign-off, not just a weld.
- Mixed metals joined wrong. Aluminum can't be welded straight to steel, and bare aluminum bolted tight to steel tends to corrode where the two touch. Those joints need a different design, not more weld.
A fast no costs you nothing. A weld that fails costs you the repair and then the replacement.
THE 30-SECOND ALUMINUM TEST
Before you send the form, check what you've actually got:
- Magnet test. Stick a magnet on it. Aluminum won't hold a magnet — neither will most stainless — so a no-stick is a first filter, not proof.
- Scratch test. Drag a key across a hidden spot. Aluminum scratches easily and shows bright silver underneath.
- Weight check. Lift it. Aluminum feels light for its size compared with steel.
If the magnet grabs hard, it's steel or iron — and that's our lane. For what a steel repair or a replacement part tends to run, see how much mobile welding costs in Fort Wayne.
If the magnet sticks, or you want a steel part built to replace the aluminum one, send the details through the quote form and we'll text back a straight written quote.
