Trailer Welding Repair in Fort Wayne: Hitches, Tongues, and Ramps
Mobile trailer welding in Fort Wayne — cracked tongues, torn hitch mounts, broken spring hangers, and ramps welded where the trailer sits.
Get My Free QuoteA trailer crack isn't the kind of thing you drive on for a week to see if it gets worse. At highway speed, a failed tongue or spring hanger is a life-safety failure, not a breakdown. Most of the trailer welding we do around Fort Wayne starts with someone noticing a rust line or a crack right before a haul, and that's the right time to deal with it.
Here's what we fix on trailers, where the honest line is, why we come to you, and how to tell a dangerous crack from a cosmetic one before fall hauling season.
What we fix on trailers
- Cracked tongues. The tongue is the most stressed point on a trailer. Cracks at the coupler end or where the tongue meets the frame are the calls we take most seriously.
- Torn hitch mounts. A hitch that's ripped its mounts out of the frame is a load-path failure — we weld the mount back to sound frame steel.
- Broken spring hangers. Spring hangers carry the axle; a cracked hanger means the axle can shift. See our cracked trailer tongue walkthrough for how these failures chain together.
- Damaged ramps and jack mounts. Ramps crack at the hinge, jacks tear their mounts loose. Both are weldable when the surrounding steel is solid.
- Fender and axle-mount cracks. Fenders crack at the mounts from impacts and curb strikes; axle mounts crack from load fatigue. Both are weldable when the surrounding frame steel is still sound.
The honest limits
We weld steel. Aluminum trailer frames and skins need a different process we don't run — if your trailer is aluminum, we'll tell you up front rather than take a job that won't hold. Thin sheet-metal panels aren't our lane either. Most fenders are thin and crack at the mount — we can weld the mount back, but a rotted-through fender panel is usually a replace, not a weld. For everything else in carbon steel, we can come to you.
Why we come to you
The trailer that needs fixing usually can't legally or safely be towed to a shop. A cracked tongue at the coupler is exactly the failure that shows up at 65 mph, and towing it to a welder is the risk the repair is supposed to prevent. Mobile welding removes that risk — we bring a generator-powered stick and flux-core rig to your driveway, farm, or lot and weld the steel where the trailer sits. For the wider math on that, read mobile welding for small jobs in Fort Wayne.
The safety line
A crack near the coupler or on the tongue is not cosmetic. Small cracks get treated as urgent because a tongue failure at highway speed is a life-safety event — yours and whoever is behind you. We grind the crack out to sound steel, weld it back with full penetration, and reinforce so the joint is stronger than the original. If the steel around the crack has thinned from rust, we tell you and talk section replacement instead. Same no-nonsense approach as our trailer and equipment repair page.
Cracks on ramps, jacks, and non-load-bearing brackets are a different category — those are real repairs, but they're not the same kind of urgent.
Check it yourself
Before fall hauling season, crawl under the trailer with a flashlight.
- Inspect the tongue welds at the coupler end and where the tongue meets the frame. Hairline rust lines at the seams are cracks.
- Look at every spring hanger. Rust jacking at the bolt holes or a visible crack at the hanger-to-frame weld means the axle is at risk.
- Check the hitch mount welds on the frame. Any tear, any stretch mark in the steel, is a failure in progress.
- Watch the ramps. A ramp that cracks at the hinge is a ramp that drops a load. For the broader field-equipment side of this work, see our cracked log splitter frame guide.
- Look at the fender mounts and axle-mount welds. Cracks here come from impacts and load fatigue, and they grow fast under a loaded trailer.
